Hi. I’m Jim Valentine and I write articles, books, and blogs about strengthening relationships and saving rocky marriages. This name, Jim Valentine, is a pseudonym, used to protect my privacy to some degree. I hope you are willing to respect that. If my use of a false name offends you, please feel free to ignore my relationship advice.
Sometimes I get free access to books, tools, e-courses, seminars, websites, and other relationship resources. When I get these or other “freebies” I do try to frame that product that has given me compensation in the best light I can. However, I also always tell the truth about what I write about. If I say I loved the book, I loved the book. If I don’t mention the book, but just the author, draw your own conclusions. If I say a couples’ retreat is great, it’s great. If I say a retreat is “on the beach” but don’t go on eloquently about “the retreat” then draw your own conclusions. If I say colorful festive music played 24/7 during the event, I may be trying to tell you that it was so noisy I couldn’t sleep. “The retreat is extremely popular” may mean you couldn’t find a place to sit together with your significant other during the event because it was overbooked. These are “codes” that allow me to make a living doing what I love and still allow you to gather information about a relationship assistance tools.
If I pay for a product with my own money and it sucks, I’m much more likely to tell you the deep unvarnished truth about it because I’m probably still smarting from wasting my own money on the thing.
So, someone reading one of my advice columns, blogs, or promotional pieces should consider that I have received compensation for writing since writing is one of the things I do for a living. They can also consider everything I say true – though it may not reflect other less attractive truths.
